Some bars may start allowing dogs!

Lawmakers in WAshington state are preparing a public hearing on allowing dogs to join their owners in bars! An excerpt states, "The Seattle Democrat's bill would allow bars and restaurants with liqu*r licenses to welcome dogs, as long as they accompany their owners and remain well-behaved and leashed. Establishments wouldn't be required to allow dogs, except for service animals." What do you think? Would you go to a bar where dogs were present? Would you take your dog?full story here: http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/P/PUB_PUPS?SITE=KYLOU&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2007-01-24-15-28-28

This is not good. there are people that are allergic out there - should they not even be abale to go to bars anymore. I am in the process of thinking about getting a dog - I would never bring him or her to a bar though, imagine the stress they would feel ...

The allergy thing makes sence, that would really suck for those who cannot be around animals. Then there is the problem with owners who do not take care of their pets....messes. I think in a big smokey bar, not a good idea. However in the small privately owned ones, not a big deal. I live in Wisconsin and have been to many bars throughout the state that have allowed dogs or cats in their bars. I know stores that have cats also. No one really says anything, just common practice.

thats good you are getting a dog. they are great pets. may i suggest you getting one from a Humane Society or the pound? if you are looking for a specific breed, request one at the center and they will search for one in your state or further even. why spend hundreds of dollars for a dog when you could just save ones life?

I can't believe that they want to make it leagle to take a dog into a restaurant or bar. Some dogs are taken better care of then others. Some dogs are trained to go to the bathroom outside some are not. Did anyone take into consideration dog hair flying about getting into the food and drinks. There could be dog fights. Patrions of the business could get bit and who is responsible for that. Everyone worries about smoking in these places but a dog is ok. I think maybe out priority is a little mixed up. You can't smoke but you can bring your dog in that has not had a bath in months and skink to high heaven. This is enough to make most sick. I think this is a bad idea.

Yeah, I can just see a couple of dogs getting into a fight and knocking over tables ! I would also be a bit frightened that some people might bring a dog that isn't very friendly!

I'm all for animal's rights, but this may be taking it a bit too far. I agree with animals being welcomed at pet stores like Petco and PetSmart, but I don't think that an establishment that serves food and beverages is the appropriate place for dogs. You have to worry about them begging for food and becoming aggressive over table scraps, maybe even biting somebody. There is also the issue of cleanliness and the health department permits. A dog in your home is one thing, but how do we know that the owners are cleaning up after the dog in the restaurant kitchen? You also have to think about people with allergies to dogs. Look at it this way: they don't allow smoking in bars or restaurants in most states, so why open the doors to pets? Of course service animals are another case altogether.

That would be my main issue. If the dogs owner would clean up after the dog. Unfortunately here and several places I've lived, a lot of owners will let their dogs do their business anywhere and not clean up after them. Also, I don't think it would be safe either. Dogs getting into fights with each other and biting patrons. That's just a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Yes, if I owned an establishment, my biggest worry would be a lawsuit. Each individual dog may be well-behaved. However, once you put 2-3 dogs in the mix, anything can happen! What happens if a patron gets a little tipsy and trips/falls near a sleeping dog and scares the dog, he could bite in self defense!

I heard about this the other day. I think it's rediculous. If a bar owner wants to let dogs in that's wonderful. But I don't think I will be bringing my dog. Who is going to be responsible when the brall breaks out and dogs go wild? Then what next, they'll be having dog fights in the back room? What about things like Kennel Cough.. will all the dogs be vaccinated? I don't think so. I lived in Washington for 6 years. So this doesn't suprise me a bit. People there already bring there dogs, snakes, birds you name it with them in stores, restaurants and bars. I used to take my parrot grocery shopping with me there. He would sit on the handle of the shopping cart chatting away at people. No one ever cared, people do it all the time there. I see people with their dogs in Walmart all the time there too. I think it would just open up the establishment to tons of law suits.

i dont think bars would be the best place for you to bring your dog. though i do think that if you worked in an office building that it would be fun to have your pet keep you company. but nah, not in a bar. people get drunk there and hey you never know if someone wants to make them fight, or if they already want to fight, or that something happens and then people get angry. bars are to crowded anyways, it would just be kindof messy for it all to happen.

I like animals, but there's gonna be a line drawn. I have allergies and already have a hard time because people bring their pets to work. Also, I've been bitten by a dog and have had several try to bite me when I walked into a place where I was legally allowed to be. And, some of these dogs were on leashes. Yes, not all dogs are like that and I know people like to take them wherever they go. But, a bar is for people, not for dogs.

i think that's dumb. why would you want to take your dog into a bar. i wouldn't go to a bar with dogs there because they might try to bite you or fight with another dog. that's just not safe. like you said unless it's a service animal then i see no point in taking a dog into a bar. i wouldn't take a dog to a bar because what if someone tried to get it drunk.

Wow, that brings up many questions! Wonder if law enforcement can ticket the owner of a drunk dog? Give the dog an AI charge?

No I wouldn't go to a bar or restaurant that has dogs licking themselves while I'm eating or drinking. It's going to be a problem when the dogs smell food. Most dogs aren't trained well enough to behave in that setting. Of course the owners of those dogs are going to get upset and uppity when they're asked to leave and not the dog laying under the next table. These establishments are going to open themselves up to law suits if a dog is spooked by a patron and bites him. ‹(°¿°)›

Yes, I would worry about being bitten. One can think that their dog would never bite, but in actuality, we never know what a dog will do when frightened. I am also envisioning a really large dog shaking its head and slobber going all over the next table's food!

My husband worked in a bar for several years and when I asked him what he thought the first thing he said was as long as food wasn't served. I laughed because when I read this post the first thought (after listening to tales of his evenings working) I had was those poor dogs would be dancing around trying to avoid being stepped on or tripped over by those not drinking in moderation. I wouldn't have a problem with dogs there if as it was stated they were well behaved. I however don't necessarily think it's a good idea for everyone. I know some people who are afraid of dogs.

Then there are the humans who turn into dogs when they have to much to drink! Ha! Perhaps the dogs might be better behaved at that point than the humans!

I don't think this is a very good idea. If you can't go out for a few hours without your dog then you have a serious problem. First off, I don't think it's very hygenic to have a dog in a restaurant (what about people who may be allergic to dog fur?) and secondly, how long before some drunk dude in a bar steps on the dog by accident and gets bit...I see a future of frivolous law suits with this one.

Or how long before two patrons get into some words and start swinging and one or both of their dogs join in the fight in attempts to protect their owners!

Dumb! If people can't go to a restaurant or bar without bringing their dog along (with the exception of service dogs) then they should stay home. I don't want to go to an establishment where dog hair may end up in my food, or I'm subject to listen to barking or being 'sniffed'. And will these owners be held responsible if their dog nips a child? Do you really want to subject your dog to fleas and ticks that another dog may be carrying? I love animals, but this is way too over the top!

Bonbon, you bring up some points that I hadn't thought about. Yes, what about the fleas and ticks that one dog may bring to another dog, or to the patrons!

For starters why would anyone want to take there dog to a bar ? It doesn't make any sence . So now we don't have to just worry about drunks on the road but drunks with their dogs . I would not enter a bar where they had dogs for starters I don't see any reason unless you are blind to bring your dog in with you . Second there are many people out there that are nervous or just downright scared of dogs . So whose responsible if the dog bites someone ? Is it the owner of the bar or the individual who had their dog in the bar ? Not to mention that now adays you have to be worried about what you spray because so many people have alleries , you can't even walk into a hospital with deoderant that smells . So there go all the people who have alleries to animals . I hope you didn't take me the wrong way , I wasn't directing this at you , I was just trying to point out what I see as wrong in this decision .

I live in Wisconsin and have been to several bars and shops where dogs are allowed to mingle and solicit affection from the customers - I think it's awesome! I love dogs and it kinda adds to the appeal of the place. I'm not sure what the laws are in my state, but its goin on!

I can't believe I had to read this many responses before talking to someone who has seen this before. I live in Iowa and seeing a dog in a bar in my town is not that uncommon. You have to realize this is a very small town and we are talking about a tavern where people sit, chat and eat peanuts. I would never take my dog to a nightclub! We are also not talking about a ferocious pit bull who is waiting to attack. I was at the local bar last Saturday and there was a regular customer sitting on a barstool with his yellow lab (on a leash) laying on the floor. Everyone who walked by gave the dog a scratch behind the ears or asked him if he wanted to shake hands! There are a couple of dogs in town that are considered regulars. They don't poop on the floor, give anyone fleas or get into a dogfight. I think it adds to the relaxed atmosphere! If you have never experienced small town living you don't know what you are missing.

That's just going a little to far. Why would you want to take a dog into a bar or mostly a restaurant? Don't you think that would be a little DIRTY. They have alot of people who are terrified of dogs and will not even go around them even if they are told the dog doesn't bite. Wouldn't this make some places loose business because the people who doesn't agree with letting dogs in restuarants and bars would probably stop going to that particular place.

There is no sure way that anybody knows that a dog is going to behave themselves. I don't think that bars should allow dogs. Once the first incident happens, they will see that allowing in dogs is a really bad idea.

Pet owners who attend bars probably like the idea that there dogs are able to go with them. I am a pet owner but I dont think I would ever take my dog into a bar with me. Sorry for all the people they dont like dogs and are there when someone comes in with there pet.
