but what about my friend who borders on being mentally retarded became a champion in a local chess tournament? What does it take to play chess?

a chess champion is a good attacker and a good defender ............................................................................................................... his way of thinking and the way in these aspects change..........and grow to a best extent

It sounds as if your friend is a savant. He is mentally challenged in most ways, but can "see" chess strategies in his mind better than most. Chess really is about being able to see several moves ahead. I'm not good at that. Those of us who play one move at a time can never be champions.
