Though most children aren't identified as gifted until they begin formal school, some show signs of being gifted at a very early age.

In my opinion, gifted children are easy to identify because their intelligence stands out greatly from their peers. For example, I have a nephew who can make out his full name using plastic toy alphabets, and able to count to 100, at the age of 18 months. By the age of 3, he can read lower primary school books without assistance. He is reading primary six (11-12 years old) science magazines now and with understanding, though he's still in kindergarten. Also, gifted preschoolers usually have a lower EQ or poorer social skill and this is obvious with my nephew.

There are specific tests that they can do to tell if a child is gifted or just above average for their age. Talk to your Doctor who should be able to put you in touch with a Psychologist who specialises in these tests. Good luck but also let the child be a child. :)
