Teething at 1?

I am just wondering if my son can still be aching from teething? Every night, we'll put him to bed (around 7:30pm) and usually around 9:30pm or 10pm, he'll wake up crying like crazy! I think it's from teething. My husband just let's him cry but also try to comfort him. We turn on one of his favorite cartoons (either Winnie the Pooh or any other Disney Movie)... He'll cry it out and then eventually have a bottle and go to sleep or just go to sleep... Has anyone else experienced this or have an idea of what this is???

Usually the molars come in later, around 12-18 months, if I remember my growth and development classes correctly. They can cause discomfort for a while before you see the teeth erupting through the gums, so this could be the cause of his crying. Did you try rubbing Ambesol on his gums? If that helps, then teething may very likely be the cause.

Just a thought, but if he's waking up at the same (or close to it) time every night, couldn't it just be a habit? I can't imagine why teething would specifically wake him at the same time EVERY night. Does he show signs of fussiness at any other part of the day? Kid's are creatures of habit, and if you're getting him up adn comforting him and giving him something he really likes when he's waking up every night, then he'll continue to do it every night. Why stop a good thing? Unless you can really establish it's related at all to teething, I would say, go in, make sure all his needs are met: Dry diaper, fed, burped, etc and then close the door and let him go back to sleep. He'll cry for a while, who wouldn't if someone was taking their special cartoon time away from them, but eventually he'll get the idea and you'll have a peaceful night.

He will continue to get teeth for some time yet. I am not sure anymore, as it has been over twentyfive years since I had a baby. These are harder to break through. Talk with your doctor about this, give baby motrin, use a numbing ointment, and iced teethers. My daughter lives several states away, and consults a baby book all of the time for answers, because they are more current and closer than dear old mom.

he could possibly be gettin his molars. usually they come in at 18 months to 2 years, but he could be getting them early and the molars (at least my experience with them) were worse then his regular teeth.

Yes, he could be getting in teeth.. have you checked in his mouth and looked around for where teeth could be breaking through. With my daughter when she wakes up crying I will put abesol on her teeth if I think it's teething and if she doesn't wake back up than I'm pretty sure that's what it was. Has your son been drooling alot too? I know that Dr.'s don't like peopel to assume that everything is teething. Has your son been pulling at his ears or extra fussy during the day, does he cry when he's lying flat on his back? Runny nose? It could be an ear infection too. One time I thought my daughter was teething a couple months ago and she's 15 months now-- and she woke up crying a couple nights in a row and I thought it was teething because I saw the tooth coming through-- but, she ended up having a ear infection so it's something to just keep an eye on. If you already knew all of this information-- I'm sorry for repeating it--but, sometimes it's nice to hear it again in case your mind wasn't going there :) Good luck. I hope it's just teething.

It definately could be, but a good way to see is if when he wakes up crying, try putting abesol on his gums & see if that helps or what I do.. is put the abesol on before I put my little girl to sleep & if she doesn't wake up crying I pretty much gaurantee that it was the teething. But, it can also be a sign of an ear infection, so you would want to watch him for that. Does he lay on his back & if so is he crying when he's on his back but fine in another position? Is he pulling at his ears? Are his ears red? If he takes a bottle or sippy cup laying down, does he cry? If the abesol doesn't work, I would take him to your Dr. just to rule out an ear infection, because some kids don't show any signs of an ear infection (like mine ) other than the waking up & crying for a little but then going back to sleep. So, just some things to look out for. Good luck.

Whenever I wonder if it is teething, I do process of elimination. Give him a little tylenol. If it is teething, he will feel better and fall asleep in 20 minutes or so. If not, hang out in his bedroom. Does the heater kick on and scare him out of his sleep? Does he wake because he is cold or hot? Or a door banging in the other room? If it seems like none of those things-maybe it is just a habit.

I also have a 6 months old and she also cries because of having irritation due to teething. The best method i found to ease her is rubbing her gums with a wash cloth. It is easy and best method to do.
