Personally, I don't think he will be the next Gretzky, he may dominate this era with Ovechkin the way Gretzky and Lemieux did in that time.
I think he will take away some of Gretzky's records but here are some of the ones I highly doubt he'll ever be able to touch:
215 points in 1 season
92 goals in 1 season
163 assists in 1 season
4 Consecutive Stanley Cups (I know this is not a record)
Fastest to score 50 goals from start of season
51 game point streak
10 Hat Tricks in the same season?
Most points in one playoff season (I forgot the exact number)

He has 47 points in the playoff, but not 4 consecutive Stanley Cups. His streak is broken in 1986 because of an infamous goal by Steve Smith.
He also has 100+ assists in 11 consecutive seasons. If this does not sound impressive to you, please consider this: in the entire NHL history, only two other players has 100+ assists; Mario Lemieux and Bobby Orr, and both of them has only accomplished the feat once.

Sorry, you are correct, Montreal won in 86, right?
and then Calgary in 89?
I think the "next Gretzky" is being thrown around a bit. I first heard it in reference to Jason Spezza when he was a kid.

Yes remember he is only 19 right now when he gets older he will get better and will possibly break Wayne Gretzky's record of 215 points in 1 season.

Sidney Crosby is definitely a SUPER STAR!! He IS the next Wayne Gretzky, for sure. Did you see him at the AllStar Skills contest and the game last night? I sure wish that the Buffalo Sabres could snag him. We would definitely have the Stanley Cup in the bag with him on our team!

I think he is very good, dont get me wrong but, I dont think Gretzkys' regime will ever be touched with what his accomplishments were in his playing days. THANKS!

This is a question which will never be answered. Crosby can rip up the scoresheets throughout his career and beat each and every record Greatzky has ever held, but there will only be one "Great One". What Gretzky did to the game of hockey is astonishing, and that alone sets him apart from any other great hockey player who comes along in the future.
However, is Sidney Crosby the best player hockey has seen since Gretzky? Definitely. Will he do great things for hockey? Yep. Will he break any of Gretzky's famous records (most assists, goals in career)? Probably. Will he ever be the next Wayne Gretzky? Not a chance.
