Google technology?

What technology or method that Google uses to search and retrieve results so fast? How many web pages it search when we search for anything? How does it perform Search? Please let me know if any body know about it.

They have a massive database on their servers, which stores the contents of the website in an easily searchable format. They fill up the database by running software (normally called a bot) that gathers information about a site, and records it in the database.
