Varanasi,an ancient town situated on the left bank of Ganges in the state of Uttar pradesh,India is both a pilgrim center and an educational center of repute. This holy town dates back to first Millennium BC. Varanasi derives its name from two streams called Varuna and Assi.It is also known as Benaras,a corrupted form of varanasi. Its importance lies in the fact that great scholars and philosophers like Buddha,Mahavira,Shankara,Ramanuja,Sanskrit grammarian Patanjali studied here and it is the firm belief prevalent in India that no education is complete without being a student of varanasi 's Kashi Vishwa Vidyalaya.Another strong belif prevalent in India is to die in this sacred place to avoid the birth and death cycle ie Nirvana. This is the reason Varanasi is always thronged by Millions of Pilgrims.

I've heard that Varanasi is great place for Tantrics also. There is an ashram in Padao which belongs to Avadhoot Bhagwaan, tantric ashram in KrimKund. The shamshaan too is significant for the point of view of liberation or Moksha as well as to attain various spiritual powers by tantrics.

So far I do not get an opportunity to be there, after reading your discussion here I am very eager to go there. I have read lot of things about this holy place in lot of books, but somewhere I have studied the sanitary conditions need to be improved there!
