How do I stop my son from grinding his teeth?

My 11 month old son is teething. He is doing ok with it, no fevers, just a little irritable, but he grinds his teeth. The two top ones against the two bottom ones. Is this normal? Will it hurt his teeth? and more importantly, what can I do to stop it? It really gives me the chills to hear it.

OMGs my son went through a phase just recently where he grinded his teeth VERY badly! i was very concerned about it, but it seems he has stoped! he may just be grinding his teeth to ease some of the pressure of teething.. im not sure what u can do about it.. try talking to your pediatrician. and hopefully its just a phase and he will stop on his own!

I know!!! My husband also does it in his sleep. I sometimes think it is stress, but, it's been for several years now. He wears a mouth guard at night. But goes through them every 4 months. I hope your daughter outgrows this.

The best thing to do is to consult your family dentist and if you don't have one, then consult your family doctor and he will refer you to a good dentist. The dentist will suggest your son to put a "routainer"(i'm not sure if that is spelled right), but this is some kind of device that your son will have to put on his teeth to prevent teeth grinding.

I will try that. I never heard of it before, but my husband wears one when he sleeps to keep his teeth from grinding. I just wonder if it will also affect his speech. I will check into it. thanks

hi there, my baby started teething younger than yours and she was grinding her teeth alot, this isn't a problem for babies and no it doesn't hurt them, with regards to the noise i just had to grin and bear it or move her away from me when she was doing it, lol! :)

Ok, thanks, any idea when it will stop? Grin and bear it, or turn up the music right?

I imagine him looking cute and adorable! Grinding baby, LoL. I think its normal for teething babies to do like that. But its irritating, I know. You may provide your baby a teether or teething ring for him to bite instead.

Yeah, he's cute, he just sounds like some poorly tuned electric guitar:) It is probably pretty normal, just none of my other kids did it.

i think this is not an abnormal thing.you do not have to worry about your son's habit.he is just 11 months old..so why are you making fuss about it???if it continues till he is 5years old or so then definitely you have to consult a doctor about it.

If it continues til he is 5, I think I will be in an insane asylum by then, so my husband will have to call the doctor. I know it is not a big deal, and so many other parents have such more serious issues with thier kids, just looking for some insight Thank you.

Sorry hon! My eldest used to grind his teeth as a baby and he is now 11 and still does at night! He'll either grow out of it or not! Not much you can do about it I'm afraid!

All my babies used to grind their teeth also . I never really worried about it too much , just didn't like the sound of it when they were doing it . If he continues to do this when he is older you can check with his dentist . But as small as he is right now I wouldn't worry about it . I think all babies do this when they are teething .
