How bad is it for your child (2) to lick the spoon or bowl after making cake mix? with the raw eggs. with all the talk of salmanila poisoning and such, I feel I shouldn't do it.. but wee all do. Have you or someone you know actually gotten ill because of it?

Growing up, I always had to lick the spoon or wisk form the mixer. After 24 years of doing so, I am just fine. It seems like a tradition in my family to do so. I always enjoyed it, I think the mass quantity might in the long run, but never heard of a real sickness from a innocent treat.

I did it as a child too, but I also rode my bike without a helmet, and never put on a seatbelt. I guess I will keep letting her lick until she gets sick-hopefully never.

I've been licking the spoons after mixing cakes for more than 25 years now, and I've never been sick because of it. I believe that you will rather get salmonella poisoning from uncooked chicken meat than the eggs.

Oh, I thought I read somewhere that the bacteria might be on the egg shells, and so I wash those first. I guess better safe than sorry.

I let my kids do it. I think if they were eating it all the time (like say a bowl a day) then it might be a problem. My kids would hit the roof if told cant lick the bowl!

Mine would too, and I think if I were eating a bowl a day, I would have a lot more things to be worried about, lol.

Thanks-it is good to know there is a site to go to that represents the "real" truth, instead of "government studies" thanks again.

I have never known anyone that had gotten sick by licking the bowl or spoon. I have done it and so have my children and they're not sick.

I did it as a child and never got sick. It's the best part of "helping" mom make cookies or a cake. I don't think that there is any risk in letting your kids lick the spoon or the beaters. I have never heard of anyone getting sick from this.

I can remember when I was younger my mother always told my sister and I not to do this as we would get worms . We both believed this and when we had our chidren this is what we told them . One day my mother asked my sister where she got such a foolish idea from . My sister told her that it was her that told her this and my mother was like "omg , I must have been just joking " , anyway my sister called me this and told me that it wasn't true at all , so now after how many years later I let my little one's lick the spoon . I don't think there is really any harm that can come from it and it just goes to show how a story can start a generation of something that was said as a joke as something that they think is fact .

That is a great story!! I can only imagine what you and your sister must have felt when you found out the truth. Isn't it funny, the things we learn from our parents, that we take as God's honest truth? Thanks for the giggle.

I have been doing it for over 50 years, everyone I know has done it. The only time we have not done it is when the eggs we get are not clean. Everyone I know does it. I listen to the numbers, 3 peoplse get sick from doing something and we should not do it, how about 58 kazillion people have done it and no one got sick. If we see a headline that says '10 people get sick from common household......'. It is headlines and it will sell. 50 million people not getting sick does not sell. News headlines make us paranoid

How true this is, sometimes we forget we have common sense, and we just follow the headlines, good point.

I haven't either-but you know how some family members, or other parents always comment on what you do.... I have been told more than once that I should not do it. I guess this way, I will find out what the real risks are. Thanks for your response.

I do it all the time and have never gotten sick from it. I love to make cookie dough to just eat, and also haven't gotten sick. So I guess it is totally up to the person if they want to take the chance.

Cake Mix & Spoon - Is it bad for you?
I never licked cake batter but did cookie dough so had raw eggs in it. I think it is sooo funny how they now say everything we did in the days we were growing up was bad and not good for you. You can get this or that. I don't know anyone that has gotten ill from it.

I don't think you should worry about this. Or just buy the eggs that are heat treated, then you don't have the problem at all :-)

I have never heard of heat treated eggs. I will have to look into it. So, they "cook" the eggs before you buy them and that kills the bacteria? sounds like a great idea. THank you.

I've never known anyone to get sick from licking the spoon. It's the best part of baking. When I was a kid my siblings and I would all fight over the spoon or beater so eventually my mom left just enough for us all to have a taste.

I don't know anyone that has ever gotten sick from that. Like you said we all do that and it is sometimes the best part of making a cake, brownies, etc.
