Bad Landlords!

I think I have the worst Landlord ever! I really wish there was a way to fire my landlord. If I could get back every penny I ever gave the man it wouldn't be enough to replace the time I've spent in this hood condo. Don't get me wrong, I love the layout, space, and location of the condo, but for the amount of money that I pay for it I often think it isn't worth it. I should have known for the very beginning that my landlord was going to be a "slumlord". I paid him the deposit and the first months rent and he told me that the condo would be ready one week before the first of the month. He did this as if I would be getting one week free (big deal). The condo wasn't ready when he said it would be, and he dodged my calls for over a week. I had to actually show up at his house and demand that he give me the keys or my money back. He got pissed and told me that I couldn't get the keys until the actual move in date stated on the lease. I was pissed. That was just the beginning of all the drama I've gone through with him since then. The most recent was the battle of the refrigerator. This condo wasn't build last year or anything, so I don't expect it to be in 100% condition. What I do expect is to have all working appliances and and a clean environment. First, the dishwasher had a hole in it and leaked water in the wall. The whole wall had to be replaced. This took several weeks, which I still paid for. Then the old as refrigerator started leaking water everywhere, so I called him and told him about it. He said that he was going to send a repair man out. It took about 2 weeks for that to happen. Meanwhile, I mopped up water from my fridge every couple of hours and dried everything off as I took it out of the fridge. When the repair man, who only knew 2 words of english finally showed. He looked at the fridge and said "no good". I don't know what he told my landlord, but my landlord turned around and told me that it was the ice maker. I think I flipped out on him. How the hell can the ice maker, in the freezer, that I never use be putting water all over the floor. To make a long story short after weeks of water he finally showed up with a refrigerator from 1973... need I say more. If I could hit him and get away with it I would have knocked him out. I seriously think he's playing a very bad joke on me. Hopefully this old bulky fridge will go out next week so that I can go purchase a fridge that actually works. What should I do about this landlord?

(((The condo wasn't ready when he said it would be, and he dodged my calls for over a week. I had to actually show up at his house and demand that he give me the keys or my money back.))) Was it ready by the 'move-in date' stated on the lease? If you were told that it would be ready on a set date and it wasn't, then he broke the contract. You should have demanded your money back and kept searching for housing... the problem is that you moved into the property anyway, which is like saying you accepted the date, condition and terms. (((What I do expect is to have all working appliances and and a clean environment.))) Of course you have the right to expect a clean living environment! As for the appliances though... you may want to re-read your lease. Our house was furnished with working appliances but it states in our lease that they (the landlords) are not responsible for repairing or replacing them. One very important thing to remember, legally, is that if you are considering withholding rent money, you are required to put the rent monies into an escrow account. If you were to go to court and they find that the landlord is entitled to the withheld money, you will have done the right thing legally and not have to be concerned about how you'll come up with the money either. If you win the case, it's all yours to keep or use to secure different housing. Good Luck! Sorry that I just found this discussion, which is a month old now : (
