What is the Network Port Use On PS2?

I wonder how does this thing work? I try to hook it with my router and see if anything goes, but nothing. I manage to set the IP address on PS2 but when i try to use it..nothing happend. I am trying to download software or firmware for my PS2 but i don't know how. Since PS2 have online feature, but i complete don't know how this thing work. Anyone can suggest a solution?! i bought this for more than 2 years now and know nothing about this network port.

the network port is used to play games online. you need an ethernet cord which you hook to one end of your router, and then plug the other end into your ps2.
