what if your friends make you choose between them and your other peers?

I had this experience during my high school that my friends make me choose whom will I consider as my bestfriends between them and with my other peers? It was a hard decision because their both my friends. What happened is that I was fall-short of a time to decide quickly on their front as they wanted me to say the answer. They left me and their mad at me. The next days during school, I wasn't able to talk to them because they felt bad at me. So, I go with my other peers and told them the story. They're the once who understand. Luckily, after some time, they were able to talk to me and say sorry for that. They'd understand that I don't stick to one group because I like anybody in school to be my friend.
