I cannot tell you why most poeple answer the phone by saying hi or hello. But I can tell you that I try always to be different and answer my phone by pretending I'm the answering machine. I say things like, at the sound of the beep, you know what to do so do it!

i used to say who the f*** is THIS?! from people calling and their number is "private or unknown" the reason i do this is because my exboyfriend still calls my mom's house. then i hang up on him. lol. but usually i will say just the usual hello.

Sometimes, I say like "Hi", this is (my name) and wait for the caller to answer back. Oftentimes, if I knew the caller, I don't say hello at all especially for close ones, I just burst out talking.

hello is our way of greeting the other person. a form of respect to people. around the world, hello's can be expressed differently. in our country, you say hello by saying "Kamusta?".
