When to throw away Food?

This is a silly subject and most of this pertains to my husband who will eat absolutely anything, regardless of how old it is, with the exception of milk. How long have you either eaten food that has been left out of the fridge (pizza's a biggie, never goes in the fridge, defrosted meat in the microwave overnight, chicken for a few hours on the counter, the list is endless), or cooked meat that you kept in the fridge for a few days?? I am a little freaky about my food, I won't eat old food, drink milk after a day or so after I buy it, and I throw everything in the trash. I wonder why he never get's food poisoning? I have had it a few times in my life from various restaurants, always hoping for a quick death. Anyone???

Some things are use by - such as milk, so I will always make sure its finished or thrown away before the use by date. The best before date is just a guide, so you can use it a few more days without it doing harm. Bread can actually be eaten up to three days after the best before, as can cake and biscuits, etc. The main one to avoid is old dairy products, they can be really nasty if they don't agree with you. The oldest thing ive eaten is a piece of three day old pizza which i'd kept in the fridge but I was a student at the time! As for your husband not getting food poisoning, everyone's physiology is different and so some people have stronger immune systems than others, another factor is you build up resistance to bacteria over the course of your lifetime, sometimes its good to let a little bad bacteria in, so the good bacteria can fight it and learn how to deal with it in future. (like when you have a vaccine which has a bit of the virus in it so your immune system fights it and you are then immune).

What about hardboiled eggs (refridgerated), garlic cloves? What would you say the shelf life for these would be?

Eggs are very nasty when they have gone off so I would say use them on the day you boil them. Garlic cloves are something of a natural preservative so they have a longer shelf life, probably a week or so.
