Shape Of Things To Come
Forbidden Planet
Earth vs. The Flying Saucers
Star Wars 1
Alien
Star Trek The Movie
Star Trek The Next Generation First Contact
Sure can pick ‘em, Bee. I’ve tried to give you a sort of history of the SF genre.
Shape Of Things To Come is from the HG Wells book of the same name, directed by Alexander Korda, pre war. The space movies developed rapidly after WW2. Forbidden Planet is one of the better movies, frequently copied. Earth vs. The Flying Saucers is a generic sort of thing, but interesting for its contemporary 50s feel.
There was a tide of instantly forgettable things pre Star Wars and Star Trek: The Movie. Then the more modern SF movies like Alien arrived, much higher quality and visuals. Star Trek TNG First Contact is an example of a highly popular cultural (not cult) version of the space movie. You’ll notice that all the elements of the previous movies are present, in a much more developed production.

You're correct. 'First Contact' was the best ST movie since 'Search for Spock' in my opinion. SF has come a long way with the new CGI technology, and I hear there are even more surprises in store in moviedom as more graphic image hard and software are being developed.
