Labradors, smart but disobedient?

Some dogs seem hard to train basically cause they're not too bright. Labradors are smart and are used a lot as guide dogs, so why is my one so disobedient? We can't let him off the lead yet on walks as he doesn't come back straight away when you call him. Although if you have treats he understands. He lived on a small island before we got him and is used to being free to roam. Is at 2 years old too early to expect obedience?

NO it is not too early to expect a good trained dog at that age. Actually, I raise Labs and train them starting at about 2 months old. My dog is trained for waterfowl hunting and is VERY obedient and was almost a finished hunting dog at 1 year old. My wifes dog received no training and sounds just like your dog. If you dont train them alot, they will not do as you expect. put in alot of time learning HOW to train first. Then afterwards, you will know how to train them to do almost anything! good luck!

How old was her when you got him? Mine is still 5months old but got him when he was2 months and he can be a little rascal sometimes. He still disobeys me now and then but I think it is normal for puppies to keep having accidents and attitude problems. As for your 2 years old, he must have gotten used to his old life before you got him. It would be nice if you had him a little young. Older ones i heard tend to have "minds of their own" already. they're not that hard to train, Labradors I mean. They just need patience. I dont know about older ones though. but then, just keep trying. :)
