When two airplanes almost collide, why is it a "near miss"? Shouldn't it be a "near hit"?

Another of those crazy English phrases that don't really say what they mean. I guess it means that although the two planes were near each other, they missed hitting.

because they didnt hit. and they nearly missed safety
