what sould first things really be?

When i was younger my parents always told me to do the first things first and that way i would be able to be succesful in what ever i am doing , i thought to my self that doing the first things really meant to follow things the proper way they should be , but along the line i have started realizing that for me first things should really mean putting God first in all things... Does any one agree with me or disagree please explain more.
