destiny:is there such a thing?

Do you believe that we are pre-destined to be someone or to be doing something that's in store for us in the future? Or is it that there is no such thing as destiny because we make our own? How about soulmates? At first I thought that I would become a doctor because I was showing some signs that I may become one someday, but things didn't turn out that way and I ended up being a teacher instead. Thus, i think we make our own destiny anyway. How about the presidents (of countries)? Do you think at least one of them could have some bit of a notion or a sign that he/she would become president? Gorbachev, for one. How about you? Any experience or thoughts on this? I really want to know.
