Battery Backup of Dell Notebook

I use a Dell inspiron 4000 notebook computer. It came with one battery and a spare battery which can be used to supplement the other battery and it can be attached to the system by removing the CD/Floppy drive (removable) and attaching the battery in that slot. Just to check the backup time of my system, I attached both the batteries, removed the power supply and started working on my system. I was shocked to notice that the batteries (earlier full charged) ;asted just for 35 minutes. Have you ever come through such a problem?? Any suggestions for me?
