What is Old?

How old is old? Is it a state of mind, or what? I mean how do you know when you are old? I've met some teenagers who just seemed so old they were brittle. Then again, my 90 year old grandma would talk about old people, and they were 20 years younger than she was.

I truly believe that it is a state of mind. My parents are 73 and others their age are hard pressed to keep up with them. My dad is just as active on the ranch as he always was. They both still ride horses, go to all the dances in the county and just generally have a good time. I don't think our heads keep up with our bodies. I would still love to pull the fire alarm in school like in the good old days. I don't think I am very mature for my age at all. I love mischief as much as I ever did. Your grandma set a fine example. Follow it!!!!

I'm trying. I got to thinking about this at a meeting, and eb=ven though I was one of the older people there, I still seemed younger than those around me. I don't know why, but it got me to thinking, and anytime i get to thinking things like that, I'm usually on here posting them! :) I appreciate your response!

Old is whatever you make it be. When i'm old and gray i'll act like a kid. I'll try and still run rings around people and keep active and fit, enjoy my life and respect my children and childrens children. I don't see age as a number, i see age as time and how you spend it and personally it's a gift which shouldn't be wasted. ~Joey

That's a good way to look at it. Although, is there something to be said for acting old? i don't mean falling asleep in your easy chair watching tv, but just aging gracefully. thoughts?

aging gracefully suites some people. personally if someone chooses to fight the aging process by acting young it's something which should be accepted. (like a alot of things in life) it's mainly down to the persons personality at the end of the day. (i'm hyper, talkative and just enjoy things) i'll continue this =) Good topic!

"Old" is totally subjective. i.e.: 80s movies are old, but people born in the 80s most generally are not. I believe word "old" can sometimes be used in place of "wise" or "weak"...again, it is all subjective. i.e. to be an antique, an object must be 25-30 years old, yet most 25-30 year old people still act like children (readers, don't get your panties in a bunch, I said "most"...so if it does not apply to you, get over it). Does that clear anything up for ya?

Old is as old as you feel, I guess. There are young old people and old young people. I am 70 but I have to keep telling myself that. My body doesn't tell me and neither does my head. For instance, not long ago we went to a gold wedding anniversary. When we arrived I looked arounf and commented to my husband that everyone there was old. There were no young people. He laughed and I realised that I was the same age as everyone else there. I have worked in a children's and youth ministry for most of my life. Most of my friends are half my age. Many teens and young adults visit me for advice and friendship. I guess this constant association with young people keeps me young in mind, attitude and activities. Age is just a number. The number has no bearing on how old you feel.

I don't know if this is good or bad of me, but I hate lies, so there's no point in starting now. I never would have guessed you were 70 based on your posts! I mean this as a compliment by the way! :) But, as I began to write this I got to thinking -- what would I expect to see from someone who is in their 70s? That got me to thinkingm that my preconceptions are all wrong, and maybe I should reevaluate how I look at things. I appreciate the great response. you always have such thought-provoking things to say!

A person old or young is not judged from their appearance but their thinking. You cansee many 70 years old and about people still active in all kinds of social activities, willing to learn new technology, playing the role of social workers etc. Many aged celebreties are consider to be young coz they still very active in commercial field, film industry, political arena etc. They may be more ambitious and enthusiastic than the young. Those young guys who do not try hard for improvement, always seeking enjoyment without making any efforts. They are consider as psycologically old.

Well, I'm 42 and I used to think that was old. How silly! It's all relative, I suppose. 20 year olds do think that 42 is old. Now I don't even think 60 is old-- I stopped thinking that once my parents were in their 60's (cause no one wants to think about their parents getting old). Now even the 70's are looking young to me.

I believe that old is a state of mind. If you are completly healthy, or feel young, or look young. Then you too are young. I know some adults that think they are old, and some elderly people who are living life to the fullest with the state of mind: being young. Young does not mean immature, and feeling old doesn't make you smart and all knowing. It could be visa versa.
