remedy for bad smell/taste in water

This summer we had a quickset pool in our yard. at the end of the year when we took it down I drained the water back into the well. Since we don't drink our well water I wasn't to concerned about it I didn" think it would harm anything. Shortly after the water began to smell different. I dumped a bottle of javex in and ran it out for several hours. The smell went away for a while but came back. I did this again and the smell came back again. I don't know what to do now. Any suggestions?
