Is Short Selling A Stock Un-American?

I operate a blog on day trading (see my profile for details) and I sometimes get emails from some really silly respondents calling me Un-American for my advocating the short-selling of weak securities or futures contracts. The argument made is that "people like me drive down the value of securities and costs ordinary folks like them thousands, if not millions, of dollars in the process" Obviously, I do not share a similar opinion, but I was interested in hearing whether or not such views were broadly held or just the voice of an unhappy (and most likely, unprofitable) minority?
