I didn't vote for it, neither did my parents. Who did vote for it?

here in south africa we have a similar problem. religious education / instruction is no longer a part of the curriculum. it's left up to parents to teach their children, but the media makes it very difficult. the latest thing here is the homosexual marriagee act that is being passed. i can not agree with that.

i don't know who took prayer out of the schools, but i think it was a right thing to do. schools are for education. churches are for prayer. you don't see your sunday school teacher getting out the algebra book. besides, anyone can take a moment to say their own silent prayer. it's what is in your heart.

i don't think any form of religion should be taught in school. is your sunday school teacher an actual teacher? i'm just saying people don't send their kids to church to be taught an acedemic education. you go to church to learn the bible and for prayer. if your son was the only student reading religious material, i would have left him go. but, with the other kids reading such matter, i would have had none reading it. but, if they were the only ones reading that nonsense, i would have told them to put it away. i know that is a double standard, but i would have been leery that someone would have picked up on it and i would have had a problem with the rest of the students. i suggest to talk to your son's reading teacher, then the principal, then the school board. and it's anything like ours...........good luck!

My sunday school teacher can teach algebra too! :) I appreciate your opinon and I have to disagree with you. I feel it's wrong to deny people from praying, reading their bible, or talking about their faith and beliefs in God....mostly Christians are being denied this. My son was told that he couldn't read his bible in reading class, because its not appropriate. He's reading...its not prngrphy or anything vulgar or destructive...what's inappropriate. A student a couple seats over from him was reading a satanic bible and that was passed by. Do you feel its right that Other religions (Not Christianity) are being taught and read about in schools?

I agree fritz. Unless it is a religious school (like I went to a Catholic school) there is no place for prayers. In the US we have seperation of state and religion and schools are a state thing--they are funded by our tax dollars and not everyone going to the school is the same religion. At a religious school you are paying the tuition to go to that particular school so they can pray all they want in class. Growing up we were required to pray before each class period. By the time I graduated high school I opted out of prayer time. I no longer believed in praying out loud. I would say the prayer in my head while everyone chanted along with the Our Father. I would not be totally objected to a moment of silence/meditation/whatever as long as they didn't call it prayer in public schools.

The "moral majority" never had an opportunity to vote on this issue...neither did anyone else! The supreme court decided this one! Please check your facts. Thanks!

The movement to remove prayer from school was started by Madeline Murray O'Hare....a vile mannered, foul mouthed, nasty woman. When she was on shows, she was bleeped so much that it was shocking in those days. Even her family and friends agreed that she was the most nasty, disagree-able person you could ever meet. At any rate, it was the Supreme Court who removed prayer from school after her campaign to do so...it never went to vote. Just another case of the minority forcing their wants down the throat of the general masses. I lived it.

Amazing....that One woman robbed all of us from our fundamental rights of being a Christian in public, while allowing other religions to present themselves any way they desire. Why was she so afraid of us Christians and especially Prayer?.......Because God is real and hears our prayers maybe.

She was really certifiably crazy. She got her just rewards though and I often wonder if she "discovered" God in the end. Her granddaughter, an atheist member and she were all killed by one another one of her own athiest members...all for rhe money their movement had raised. Seems like just rewards, doesn't it?

One loudmouthed woman took it to the Supreme Court, and they decided that praying in school was unconstitutional. That was in 1962. Back then the discipline problems in schools were talking in class and chewing gum. Today, we hear of rape, assault and murder at school. Does anyone see a connection here? It is certainly someone's right to not participate in something, but to have it taken away from all to make a few happy is wrong. What ever happened to majority rule?

I completely agree with you! Look what is being forced upon our kids now with the homosexual agenda. Teachers can no longer discuss families with a mother and father and children. They can now openly talk about transvestites, 2 mommies, 2 daddies, etc. With prayer and the Bible being left out of the schools the kids have no respect for anything...Why should they?

You are so right! It was never put to a vote, it was just arbitrarily decided that we shouldn't have prayer in school anymore. And about our representatives, I believe that 99.9% of them are there for their own pockets getting filled...and the devil with the people! I am a bit cynical about politicians these days, on both sides!

You make a great point about being a PUBLIC school. I'm not Catholic, but I'd like my children to have the freedom to pray if they choose, read the Bible if they choose, and be able to discuss their beliefs openly, just like other religions are allowed to. I don't feel it should be forced on people and I think that's what most people don't want. Strange thing is the Christianity was acceptable all the time and because of 1 person, those rights for Christians have been taken away.

I'm starting to realize their are some schools that have staff that allow it and don't make a big deal about it, because most of them are Christians themselves. That is a blessing for you and those schools. My sons were both asked to not read the Bible during reading time, but another student was reading the Satanic Bible and nothing was said. Those are the times that I feel are wrong, but you say anything to the teacher and your child starts failing their class for some reason.

You can still go to public achool and pray and etc... The school can't say no if you do it on your own time instead of in class time. =) People prayed at my public school all the time.

I don't know I wish they would put it back in school, I don't know why someone would think praying is going to hurt someone, I don't think it is fair to the people who like praying, I think school would be alot better with prayer.

Of course they should be able to Prayer. By doing Prayers in the early age a child's mind gains the human touch, which has now become a rare quality in adults.

Unfortunately, if you interpret the Constitution the the way the Supreme Court did, praying in government funded schools (or at least the school asking kids to) is illegal. I do think kids should be allowed to pray if they choose to though.

Not making the kids pray is one thing and okay I don't have a problem with that. I don't feel a child should be reprimanded for offering a prayer, reading the Bible or sharing their faith openly, of course not interfering with teaching time to do it though.

If a student wants to pray, go for it. But it shouldn't be something given by the school (public schools, anyway). If a student doesn't want to pray, depending on their personal preference or religion, it's wrong to require them to do so. That's why it was taken out of schools. But I say if the kid wants to, nothing should stop them.

Unfortunately because its not allowed in the schools, some teachers press their students if they choose to read the Bible or speak of their faith. So I guess it depends on what kind of teacher of school staff are present and how far each of them personally take it. Thank you for sharing.

Prayer has never been taken out of the schools. Anyone can pray anytime or anywhere they want. What has been removed is praying audibly. Schools are government institutions. For a public school to permit prayer would be like establishing a state religion... whish is forbidden by the U.S. Constitution. It's all religions or none. Schools chose none for obvious reasons.

Well said to clarify how prayer has been removed. Unfortunately, with it being removed audibly it is looked down upon if students want to pray in groups. Also, you mention All or None. So explain why the Muslim religion can still be taught, discussed, and children told to write about or enact a Jihad in their classroom. We had to protest against it being done, but its still being presented anyway. I feel there is nothing wrong with discussing Religions in a Historical setting...like History Class. Not forcing anyone to participate in any part of it, but just informational purposes.

I agree. There can be classes about religion in a historical sense. I can't believe Islam is being taught, as in making students face Mecca and pray 5 times a day. If that were the case you should protest.

Here in CA, you are taught in the schools now to keep your religion to yourself, if you're a Christian. Muslims can disuss their religion and even set-up mock jihad's in the classroom (that happened right after 911 took place), but don't you dare talk about Jesus....Example: Christmas/Easter and Christ being any part of that. Don't get me wrong, some teachers are fair, but the School District's are making it extremely difficult.

No one. It gives moral support to teachers, eventhough child did not get any interest/education in their school. God and prayers will act as "Scape Goats" or "Jack ..." at times to cover school administration failures. So it is necessary to continue the PRAYER in schools.
