Anyone have experiences learning a second language? What did you learn and how did you learn it? How long did it take you?

My native language is English. I learned Portuguese, which is my wife's native. She moved her at 15 and had to learn English as a teen. Imagine how hard that was. I learned Portuguese from her over a period of about two years but it wasn't like sitting down to study it like in school.

I learned afrikaans in school, it was a compulsory second language. It took about 8 years, and i still cant speak a word of it. At most I can parrot a few phrases of it. I dont know why but i am strangely proud of that fact.

I'm trying to learn Spanish. Just out of interest. I know the basics. It's not difficult but just time-consuming. I think it's harder cos' it's just something that I'm doing as a hobby as opposed to learning the language out of necessity. So, I just pick up a few new words here and there.
