Are You A Dreamer?

Romany Caravan and Horse - This is my dream. To travel the countryside in a Romany Caravan and be free.

I certainly am... well, I'm an air sign, so who can wonder at it!:-) I have a dream to buy a Romany Caravan and a horse, and wander free, wherever the mood might take me. Unfortunately, the laws in this country are quite stiff as to where travellers are able to stop, so I thought about travelling Ireland's lush green countryside. I would like to be self-sufficient, except for where the horse is concerned, of course. He would have to have his hay and oats, but a nice working Shire Horse, perhaps a grey, or white one, pulling a Romany Caravan, with the wind blowing through my hair and sun flickering down on me through the trees, then a peaceful place to stop for a night or two, to rest the horse, a camp fire under the moon and stars, and perhaps a babbling brook or waterfall nearby. Wonderful... I would love to feel the freedom of a Romany Gypsy. Does anybody else have a dream like this? Maybe we'll never get it but it doesn't hurt to dream... you never know what might happen!

Hi Darkwing. I cannot express how excited I was to find this discussion. To see that there are other people, if only a few who are not of Romany descent who wish to live the wandering life as they do is a vast relief for me. I have been dreaming about just such a life since I was 15 years old. I am now 23. I am actually in the works saving my money to buy a bowtop vardo from a wagon maker in Oregon or possibly Nick Dow in the UK, as well as a pair of good horses. I am curious who your friend in Washington is, as I also am from Washington state and have plans to start my travelling in the US. I would advise you to do a lot of research if you truly wish to live this life. As they say "freedom comes with a price". This life, while free is very hard and you will have to be able to handle problems on a day to day basis, whether it be getting food or water for you or your horses, being moved on in the middle of the night by very unpleasant people, being hassled by Romany themselves as many do not like the gadje at all and can be very aggressive towards us, especially if it seems to them we are trying to pretend to be something we are not. The list goes on and on. Don't forget to map out where you can get supplies from, whether it be a wheelwright for wooden wheels or a supplier of artillery wheels, good stopping places, bad stopping places, places where you can do odd jobs or sell wares, etc etc. I would love to chat with you further about your dreams and plans, and talk with your friend from washington as well. My email is WoodlandWolfen@hotmail.com

Oh wow... it's indeed exciting to find somebody of like mind, my friend. My friend lives in Tumwater, Washington State... now in an RV Van, which is beautifully furnished and she is able to drive around whenever she feels the need. There's nothing like the absence of a motor though, and the addition of one or two shire horses to pull you around. It's such a different life... no hurry, and feeling the wind through your hair, really appeals to me. I'm pagan anyway, so am aware of the moving on and hostility, but I think I could cope with it, somehow. I know how to place protection around me. I guess the ideal scenario would be to have somebody who would enjoy the same life, with you... somebody who is also a pagan and able to protect, huh? Yes, it's difficult... there are a lot of things to think about, but I'm sure that with a bit of foreplanning and calculation of daily mileage, it could be done. The Romanies are pagan too, so of similar ilk, but they can be hostile to those who try to emulate them, I know. Thank you for your e-mail address. I'm away from home at the moment, but I will certainly get in touch when I'm back. Thank you for your much-valued contribution and Brightest Blessings.

That's a big dream Nagareru! I guess you're going to be travelling half-way round the world soon, then! Or maybe, as a worldwide singer, she will come your way. Keep dreaming!!! Thank you for your response, and I hope your dreams come true.

I do dream and I love dreaming. I dream about lots of my unfufilled wishes. Sometimes I dream that I am a prince living in a big castle near the a big lake with lots of green nature with a big waterfall and me driving in a horse. Sometimes I dream about the beautiful girls and that I am talking with them. Sometimes I dream I own a big library with lots of books and I love reading books. There are lots of things that I dream and the dreams helps me to stay happy.

I would imagine dreams keep us going in life. We know there's something great for us and if we believe we're going to reach that land that we dream of, and work towards it, we will find it in the end, by staying positive. Brightest Blessings my friend and thank you for your contribution.

Very rare that dreams become a reality but it is nice to dream all the same. I suppose that wishfull thinking could come into the category of dreaming. I sometimes wish that I would come into loads of money which would give me the oppotunity of helping the less fortunate in life and give them the means to live it better. You cannot take money with you when you die but can be used to great effect when we are here.

That's very true Deeky, and a very commendable dream on your part. It is very rare that dreams come true but if you want something badly enough, it is possible to reach your dream, I think. You need to really focus though.

Hi Darkwing, thats a great dream to have and there is a guy round this area that drives around with his traditional old Romany Gypsy caravan and his horse, he was about over Christmas time. It's a great dream to have and I'm sure you can get holidays in Ireland in Romany Gypsy Caravans that wander around - so your dream might not be that out of reach! I think we should all have dreams and i'm sure mine change from day to day - i would love to live somewhere hot though and close to a beach (being a fire sign it always helps to live near the sea)

Yes, you can take romany holidays in Hampshire as well. The only problem with that is, they're all organised and you don't really experience the freedom of it, but I might contemplate taking such a holiday sometime. I certainly don't think my dream is out of reach... I even had somebody offer to build me a Romany Van. That would be fun, having one built to specification. I'm pondering that one, and waiting to see what he comes up with! lol. Funny you should mention fire sign and sea, because I'm an air sign and I'm looking for my freedom to roam the countryside. Hmmmm... great Ws think alike. Blessed Imbolc and thank you for your response, Bizzie. :-)

Oh that would be nice if you get one made! I didn't realise the holidays were all organised, but I suppose they have to be. Shame really but I suppose it would give you a taster of life in one! :-) Brightest Blessings!

I just might get around to it soon... my family held me back but they're all growing now, the youngest having reached nine, so the wrench won't be so great. I have a friend in Washington who has a similar dream. Perhaps I'll team up with her... it sure would be fun. Thank you for your response, and Brightest Blessings.
