Too meet someone U have met online

Here is my story =)
Many years ago I met a guy while chatting online. I am from sweden, he was from the states. We started talking and I thought he was alot of fun.
I gave him my emailadress and for months we kept emailing and I even downloaded AOL so that we could chat.. After months of chatting, emailing and stuff, he asked if he could call me.
I gave him my number and later that week he called. We talked about everything and nothing.. We just had alot of fun..
It was never ANYTHING more than friendship. he was interested in Sweden and I in america and we fitted good as friends.. it was never love..
Anyways, this became a weekly rutin. He called every week and we would talk for hours every month...
After about 2 years he said that he was going to engladn to meet his cousin and he wondered (since england is so "close") If they could come visit for a weekend.
I said yes ofcourse and was really excited about it. I felt like I knew him so well =)
The day came. Me and a friend picked him and his cousin up at the airport... and the weekend was a disaster...
We had NOTHING incomman and nothing to talk about and it was a relife that he had his cousin with him. His cousin was a blast *hehe*
When he left I was happy to get rid of him *he he he*
After that I had no more contact with him and I still wondered how it could go so wrong. How can you keep up a friendship for years online and on the phone, and when u finally meet - NOTHING!!!
Ps; me and his cousin are still friends and he has visited me with his girlfriend a few times.. Me and my bf are going to visit them in england next =)

How can come people so different in reall what they are in net or over the phone. There may be some differences but this musch is like oposite. It's good for you that after loosing one friend you got his cousin as a good friend. I am glad for you.

Yeah it seems that alot of times people arent who they seem to be when it comes to being online (or not face to face). He could have also just been nervous never meeting you before. I have met 2 people off of the internet and I was very nervous but we still got along very well. Its to bad that happened after talking so long.

He didn´t strike me as a nervous person though, just very ignorant and narrow minded and I guess these are the things you can´t se online or on the phone =)

If you guys were able to talk on the phone and converse via the internet for 2 years, you must have had quite a few similar interest. Maybe after meeting it was just a chemistry
clash, I know some people may not believe it possible,
but from what you are describing, I think that just maybe that is what happened between the two of you...SS

This just proves once again that you never know who you are dealing with on the Internet, or on the phone either, for that matter. It is easy enough to "hide" behind a computer screen or over the phone and portray yourself as whatever you want the other person to believe you are. The true person comes out in person, and unfortunately many times you find that you don't like that person. People also get a false sense of "bravery" and courage when chatting online. This may make you think that they are interesting and dynamic people, only to find out in person that they are boring and that you don't have anything in common. Anyways, I'm sorry that you had to deal with that, but look at it this way: at least you did gain 2 new friends (his cousin and girlfriend), and that will probably be more lasting.
