How do you know if your infant's crying is a result of hunger, need for diaper change, or something serious? Im a new mom and all i know is what i've read on parenting books. So please post ideas.

If you have feed, changed, isn't running a fever or anything, it could just be that your baby just wants to be held and cuddled. My baby girl would cry and I would freak out because I didn't know what was wrong and she would just want some mommy time. She is a little over a year old now and still just wants some mommy time for like 10-15 minutes.

Hi Hart! I agree with Toots. After a while you get to know the child's different cries. Trust me, you will KNOW when your child is crying for an extremely serious reason. (sorry for the typos, lol) As a mom you just KNOW these things dear, trust me, you have it in you, its a maternal thing. :)

the baby is crying and hungry when you see her trying to suck up her thumb! dont let her do that because she'll do it evrytime she feels hungry and she might get a callus! not a good sign and worse she'll lose her appetite.

my daughter also cries when her diaper is full! right now she eats every four hours so i know when she is hungry! but sometimes she is crying and if she doesn't stop i give her her bottle sooner and it works! there are days she needs more, and days she eats less then normal!but most off the times she is hungry! right now she is teething so that's the next problem!(i mean another reason to cry)

i think the first few weeks you just gotta really keep track of feeding and diaper changes, try to get your self on a baby system. so that you dont overwhelm yourself, when she cries check the diaper, if that wasnt it, see if shes hungry, No? pick her up and soothe her. after a while you will get used to the different cries and instantly you'll be like oh that means its feeding time...etc etc. congrats and good luck!

In the beginning it's difficult to tell why your baby is crying, but mom's over a short period of time come to know the different cries that a baby makes. Then there are the times that babies cry for apparently no reason they are dry, fed and loved at those times we just need to show them love. The best thing to do when a baby cries and you don't know why is to try and not stress as babies pick up on that. Stay calm and elaxed and soon yur little one will calm back down. Hopefully that helps some. :)

Personally they sound different to me. I know when my son wants attention, a clean nappy or because he's hungary. It's pretty easy to tell =) my son goes bright red when he's trying to sleep. it sounds screechy and kinda goes up and down then stops. when he's hungary it's pretty much like a police car. Nappy he looks said and you can hear how he finds it annoying in his crys. Basicly this how i tell. i think most parents will probably notice the same things. kudos! ~Joey

I'm not yet a parent but I usually take care of my first born nephew, when he cries during night I check if his diapher is full or try to feed him if he's hungry and if not I check his temperature if he's not feeling well. But aside from that I'm very careful with his head and mosquito bites. Sometime he cries while sleeping maybe he just got some dreams of somewhat need some attention to help him sleep. :P

babies usually cried for hunger when its abt time. some will be fast like every 2 hours 1 bottle of milk or some 3 hours n it depend. so monitor ur infant to see if he's passing motion if he cry n pls remember the time when u last feeded him as its important. if it serious like he got fever or something they will probably cry non stop even if they have jus had their bottle. always make sure to monitor ur infant n i think he or she will be fine.
