engine rebuilding

I have just rebuilt my 1973 ford pinto motor. I replaced the rings, and new gaskets thru out the motor. I checked to make sure #1 piston was up and the exhaust valve was open on #1. Now my motor is sucking in thru the plug hole instead of blowing out. Anyone have any idea why or how to fix this problem?
