Yes we do this in our family and there are only 2 of us. We first started to do this when we were trying to save money to buy our first house, and we found that it saved us a lot of money as the extra planning meant that we already had the food in for the week so wouldn't have to go to the shop to find something for tea and therefore didn't risk spending money on things/extras that we didn't need. It also meant that we only bought enough food for the week ahead which stopped us wasting money on unnecessary food. It also stopped us from impulsively buying takeaways as we knew what we were going to eat each night. Planning meals is definately a habit that's worth getting into, it's saved us a lot of money and we eat better than we ever have before. It also stops us from wasting food.

I do this, mainly because I make groceries by the week. I usually go to the grocery on saturday or sunday with my list of meals and the items needed for those meals. It helps with saving money and so I won't have to much junk food in my house.

Yeah I think the bigger your family gets the more organized you need to be.

Yep, thats what I discovered when I did it. Mealsmatter.org is a perfect place to get this started.

I used to do this. I would make up my menu based on a few main items that were on sale that week, then make up my grocery list from that. My family loved it because they could have something different for dinner every night.
Now that I can't eat wheat or dairy, I find it much more difficult. I can still make up a menu for the rest of the family, but I now have to make separate meals just for me. It's almost double the time and effort to organize it all. Sorry to be a whiner, but it gets to me sometimes.
