the picture of Asthama in a layman's mind is one of the acute difficulty in breathing with loud noisy and wheezy respiration, lasting a few hours and then disappearing, only to repeat itself after a variable period. While it is true that asthama occurs in dramatic acute episodes, all asthama is not spasmodic. There are wide variations in symptoms, severity and acuteness. Some patients aretruly spasmodic and completely normal between the attacks, but for many others some degree of cough, wheeze and tightness of the chest in variable degree and combination punctuated by acute symptoms in a common feature.
