Could gravity slow the expansion of the universe?

If the space among galaxies is being stretched why can’t the gravitational force among them affect it somehow?

After the theory of the 'Big Bang', many astrophysicists have wondered if the gravitational pull of all stellar object could cause a reversion of the expansion as we currently see it and lead to a 'Big Crunch'. The topic is still being discussed among experts and no real forecast of the future of the universe has been established yet.
