I need some advice. Should I go after my daugther's father for child support?

My daugther is 6 1/2. I left her father and got a divorce when she was 8 months old. She has not seen her father since. When I got divorce I took back my maiden name and changed my daugther's last name to have the same as mine. He knows where we are and knows how to get ahold of me. He has not paid a penny of child support and I have not gone after him for it either. Since then I have gotten remarried and had another child. My daugther calls her step-father daddy and he considers her as his daugther. We are currently having some financial problems. To make sure the my daugther is always well taken care of financially I have been considering going after he for child support. Did I mention that he is a druggie. I am afraid that if I go after he will want to see her and subject her to his other world of drugs. Any advice?
