do cats and dogs sense your moods?

I notice that when I'm down my cats tend to be close to me. When I'm happy they seem to be more lively and playful. Has anyone else noticed that in their cats or dogs? Do you think they can sense our moods?

Sasha and his brother - Mycats know when I am sad
Oh yes, most definately. if ever I am in tears, or upset, my Sasha comes to sit on my knee, and cuddle me, and he tries to lick my face, just like a Mother cat licks her kittessn to try and comfort them. Cats (and dogs) have huge amounts of sensitivity, and intelligence, that we can't even begin to understand. They are much more intelligent than human beings I think!

That sounds so comforting, you're cats sound very intuitive to your moods. Thanks for sharing that.

I do beleive that dogs, expecially sense a humans moods and feelings. Since dogs do not remember what has happened 5 minutes ago, they are guided naturally by instinct, which is learned and taught to a dog as he is a puppy. Ussually that is where you would get the phrase 'you cant teach an old dog new tricks'. So by means, when a dog sees you are not happy, he will try to be the best pet by making you happy, and if he can tell you are in a good mood, he will most likely be happy for you and want to play with you. I have noticed that dogs can sense fear very well also, expecially the wolf breeds like german shepards and huskys. I beleive they have more of the wolf characteristics, and if they sense fear in you (of fear of them) they will try and become the dominant one by scaring you off and protecting their territory. This is especially true when they have a special toy or chunk of meat or bone and you come near it. My dog snaps. I think that this is more common in the wolf breeds than any other breed of dog as they have the characteristics and instinct for survival in harsh conditions.

I think cats do to. Our cat does not really come and lay by us but have noticed that when something is wrong he comes and sits on our laps. Our dog does not do anything.

I know dogs do. They have this innate feature. When I'm tired or feel sick they always lie down by my side and make like a crying sound of a dog as if they're feeling the stress I'm feeling. It's a comforting thought specially if you live alone at times. They sometimes even do stupid/funny stunts just to liven you up.
