SUV's - Status Symbol or Safety?

United States

I got into a discussion with someone here at work today in which I said that I believe that most people here in California (especially in Southern California) have GIANT SUVs (such as the Escalade) because it's considered a status symbol(or to be cool)...she disagreed and said it's due to safety. Now - I do agree that not all people buy them for status but I do believe that a majority do. I also asked about how many of these SUV's actually go off road. What do you think?

Status or not, good question. I can't say for all I do believe that do to the types of SUV's yes it would be the status. I see alot of Hummer SUV's here however have never seen them at the off road place that we go to. I know that with so many blended families people do have to but some of the larger vehicles to be able to get all the kids in the car. As for safety, while yes in an accident with a smaller car the SUV will probably hold up better, there really is no safe vehicle. I say this from working at an auction yard that worked directly with the insurance companies and the vehicles that came in both large and small just don't hold up at high speeds, when rolled over, and just about anything else that you could imagine happening while driving a car. So while I do think that some people buy certain models for the status, in today's age I think that alot of people need the SUV out of necessity and believe it to be a safer vehicle. That's just my 2 cents. Good luck here at mylot!
