Discuss? The family of a one-month-old baby who was brutally beaten says they're getting ready to say goodbye. Baby Christiona is in critical condition after police said her father punched her repeatedly. Her father is charged with first degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Police said Christopher Shelly, of Gertrude Street, was watching his daughter Christiona Tuesday night while the baby's mother, Stephanie Wood, 18, was visiting a neighbor. Shelly told police the baby wouldn't stop crying, so he punched her. The couple didn't bring the baby to the hospital until Thursday night, two nights later. Syracuse Police Chief Gary Miguel, said “In his statement he in fact says 'he would never shake the baby because he knows and has seen that, that is not a good thing to do.' So, he punched the baby repeatedly." The next day, the mother noticed bruises on Christiona. The baby's mother and grandmother talked to the media outside University Hospital on Friday night. They say Christiona is on life support and they are waiting for family so that they can say goodbye. “Half of her brain is damaged, the other half seizing. She’s gone,” Adina Moyer, Christiona’s grandmother said. “It’s the worst feeling in the world, and my heart goes out to everybody who’s ever lost a baby,” mother Stephanie Wood said. After changing his story several times, police say Shelley admitted to the abuse. Wood is not facing any charges, but Shelly is being held at the Justice center on $20,000 bail on charges of assault and endangering the welfare of a child. To me I find this SICK. They should've taken her to a doctor the night it happened, not wait TWO DAYS. That little girl might still be here ... if they had. Oi.
