Why Do People feel the need to Lie?

i try not to lie and i find it annoying when people do.but at times i have found myself lieing .example pulled over by the police i wasnt speeding when i know dam well i was .so i guess there are times when you need to lie

vallidation, acceptance, to stay out of trouble....this is just what I have seen in children.

i try not to lie too often, and when i do i try to make sure its not on something big...for instance i will tell my fiance that i didnt have time to go to the bank, when the truth is that i had plenty of time, but was lazy... something small like that...
