Cat Jack - jack scratching himself

My cat Jack started licking his belly intensively about a year ago. He now has a bald stomach and its started to go all leathery. He can be cleaning himself and then he suddenly gets the urge to lick his belly. He knows its bad because he tries to do it when we're not watching, and I have a feeling he doesn't want to do it, its just an urge. He's been to the vets and was put on steroids to distract him but it hasn't worked. Anybody got any suggestions?H

omg.. that is really a problem.. luckily my cat doesn't do this. try putting vinegar on her tummy. they don't like it and it is safe for them instead of the lemon juice. i hope this works.

Thanks for the advice. I'll let my mum know and see what she thinks.

try putting vinegar on the spot. it is safer than lemon juice. a friend of mine (a cat trainer) says overlicking could mean many things, including the fact that it feels pain on that particular spot. or the cat has a fungal infection. try this link htpp://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=1&cat=1332&articleid=150

My brother-in-law had a cat that was compulsive about being clean. Which was a very good thing. When he used the litter box he would take one foot out and scrape it against the side of the box to get all the sand off and then take it out and go to the next one until he has cleaned them all off. When he came inside he would make sure he would completely clean himself before walking throughout the whole house. I wish my cat was the same way!
