Profiles take a lot of time to load

I have seen that profiles take a lot more time than normal pages to load. Why is it so?

If the person has a very colourful and full profile, it will take longer to load. Some people have lots of pictures and friends(which have avatars) which is probably the main reason for it taking so long to load. The pictures that is.
