48 diamonds. The 1st thief takes 24+2=26, leaving 22. The 2nd thief takes 11+2=13, leaving 9. The 3rd thief takes 4+2=6, leaving 3. The last thief takes 1+2=3, leaving none for the 5th thief. Keep in mind, you can't steal 1/2 a diamond.
