I have the female dog and I am getting her spayed. As soon as I got the appointment she started going through her heat. I call to reschedule the appointment and they told me that they can still do it but it will be a extra $10. Is this okay to do. I am afriad. Help me out please!

Going into heat is the same as a girl getting her period. I work at a vet, this is perfectly fine to do.

It is a good thing to worry about your pet though and good for asking.

I have always been told by my vet that you need to wait till after she has finished with her heat. We are waiting to have Tara done. If I was you, I would reschedule the appointment. Better safe than sorry. Do you have any dog books that you could check? I do. If you want me to check them just let me know.

I think it is fine. The vet wouldnt endanger your dog.

The extra money reflects the increase in difficulty for the vet in the surgery. Its more bloody and messy. There is the tiniest increase in risk, but when I worked for the vet we did them all the time. No big deal.

Spaying a female dog is actually a hysterectomy. SO I don't think it matters much if she is in heat or not. It probably just makes the procedure a little more complicated, because parts will be swollen. But either way, they are removing her uterus, and they can do that with the same amount of risk and success no matter what is going on with the animal.

You can spay a dog/cat while they are in heat or even pregnant. It will not harm the animal. I also applaud your decison to spay/neuter. It is so important in our fight with over pet population. I volunteer at my local SPCA and it's a shame to see all the homeless animals that enter the shelter and never make it out because there arent enough homes for them. Back to the procedure, do whatever is comfortable to you. If you feel comfortable with it, then go ahead, if not, reschedule and just be sure no males get to her while shes in heat this time around. Good luck!
