I get ticked at people that tell others to use common sense because they usually have no idea what commone sense is. What is your concept of common sense? Here is a quote from Albert Einstein - Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen.

Common sense is actually a very important thing that keeps our life moving in the right direction, but ironically it does not work at the most critical situations. It really fails you. It is the thing that works only when you are free of worries and tension.

If this is the case then we need to live lives that are less stressed. :)

well, I'd say that if you know that fire will burn houses down then if you have any common sense you will instinctively know that you should be careful with fire, even if you haven't actually ever gone near it.

It is funny to hear people mention common sense, especially when they don't have much of it. To me, common sense is just making logical sense of something. Like if you want to make a cake....make sure you have all the ingredients in the kitchen before you start mixing things all together. Better yet, if you buy a $3 soda with your last $5, don't expect to eat a gourmet meal for dinner with only $2 left. Turning your car signal on before you make a turn, actually gives people a clue what you're thinking about doing...instead of assuming they can read your mind. Okay...I think I'm touching a little on more of a "Blond" side than lack of common sense on some of those examples. Anyway....interesting quote from Albert that's for sure.

Yeah people sometimes don't seem to have any kind of sense at all. I have some friends that do the dumbest things and can't understand why they keep doing dumb things. :)

I think common sense is supposed to be what everyone is "supposed to know" in a culture or group. Problem is that, especially in places with cultural diversity, not everyone has the same experiences and backgrounds. I also think someone says something like "use your common sense" is the same way as "grow up". It's just a meaningless put down.

Bingo and that is why we have to be so careful on mylot because one person's common sense can clash with other cultures. Great post thanks

In theory, common sense should be stuff that a reasonable and prudent person would find to be wrong or right. Unfortunately, my experience is that common sense is an oxymoron.

One person's 'common sense' is wrapped up in their level of understanding their surroundings. Some people just don't get it and things don't make the same sense to them that it does most others making their sense a lot less common that most. :)

It is the natural ability to talk to someone with fluency and effeciantly and we can't learn it in any kind of institution or school.

Any one who has common sense will remember that the bewilderments of the eyes are of two kinds, and arise from two causes, either from coming out of the light or from going into the light, which is true of the mind's eye, quite as much as of the bodily eye; and he who remembers this when he sees any one whose vision is perplexed and weak, will not be too ready to laugh; he will first ask whether that soul of man has come out of the brighter light, and is unable to see because unaccustomed to the dark, or having turned from darkness to the day is dazzled by excess of light. Plato, The Republic

that's way beyond me, I don't know what that has to do with common sense. I think I need more education.
