Preventing hepatic lipidosis?

I have a 10 year old cat. She's not terribly overweight but she's toward the pudgy side. Last night, my roommate and I brought her here to our apartment from my parents house (a 30 minute drive.) She's been separated from the other cat we've had longer than I've had this one. (I can't bring both, pet deposit is 400.00. And this one's got separation/attachment anxiety issues with me, since I'm 'mommy', as I found her as an abandoned underager.) I managed to get her to drink a little bit of 1% milk earlier, and little bits of food and water from my fingertips, but that's it. She even turned down smoked deli turkey that I was eating. I'm considering going to the grocery store and buying some high calorie liquid baby food, and if absolutely necessary, force-feed her to keep *SOME* degree of food and nutrients in her. I'm about to go try to make her drink some water, even if just a bit, to keep her from getting dehydrated. I really, really can't afford a vet visit, but I'll manage it if I absolutely have to. However, I'd like to try to keep her eating, keep food and water in her, avoid hepatic lipidosis if at all possible. Does anyone else have any suggestions, things they've tried, advice or tips?
