Starve a Cold or Feed a Fever? Or Vice Versa?

I've heard this saying SO MANY TIMES and I can never remember how it originally started? Do you starve a fever and feed a cold - or do you starve a cold and feed a fever? Are we talking about eating when we're dealing with a cold to get over it and fast when we have a fever - or is it the other way around? Anyone?

The saying is "Feed a cold and starve a fever". Makes sense, because when you have a fever you are fighting a virus and you want to support your liver to do the best job it can do to get rid of the toxin. So drink lots of fluids to flush out the virus and keep the kidneys healthy. Just my opinion.

I never could make much sense of this saying. I just eat when I am hungry, drink lots of clear fluids and sleep even if I don't feel like it. It all just has to run its course anyway.
