After watching a show on this last week, I am convinced most Americans have pretty bad credit. What do you think?

Most Americans really have a lot of credit. And it's not only the poor people that have them even the rich people. Well, I don't have any credits. The use of credit cards or getting loans is not really rampant here in the Philippines. And Im glad about that.

By "credit" I don't mean "credit cards" I mean bad or good credit rating.

I love hearing stuff like that, my credit isn't bad, I just don't have any established credit so the worse things get with peoples credit, the better I look when I apply for one. Twisted logic there but it's true. How can I establish credit when no one will give me a credit card?

You are in an excellent place. You are a clean slate. Your credit report and score are a measure of how well you pay your creditors on-time. Therefore, if you start with a good credit history, that's all you would have had. You won't have any bad credit, just good. That puts you ahead of most other people who have had a bad credit account sometime in their lives. You're score could be higher than most right off the bat! I suggest looking into a secured credit card. Go to a couple local banks and compare them. I know Bank of America and Wells Fargo offer them. You put $200 into a savings account with them and they give you a card with a credit limit of $200. Make sure they don't confuse this with a debit card. A debit card is a card you use to access your own money in a checking or savings account. The secured card is different. Your original $200 stays in the savings account until you close your credit card. As you use the card, you are actually borrowing money from the bank, up to $200. If you ever fall behind and can't make payments, they simply deduct it from your savings account, so there's no risk to the bank. For that reason, it is near impossible to be denied for this type of card. Make sure you can pay your balance off every month. Don't use any more than you can afford for that month. As you make your payments on-time your credit score will go up. After a while they will offer to give you the $200 back and leave the card open, making it a traditional unsecured credit card. Soon you'll get offers with Preapprovals in the mail. Get 2-3 cards and keep using them all in the way I explained. Soon you'll have a better credit rating than someone who has been working on theirs for years! Best of luck!

I believe that more and more people are in debt and have bad credit. I used to have great credit but after my daughter was born, I was on bedrest and had to quit working sooner than planned, then my job never gave me a baby shower like they promised so my husband had to go to the store and buy everything we needed when I was in the hospial after having our daughter. So needless to say he charged a lot and we just didn't have the money to pay the bills. So our credit is terrible but we are working on it and trying to get it back on track.
