Does snow make a noise?

February 8, 2007 7:05am CST
When it is snowing I notice that there is a really different atmosphere in the air and I can almost hear the snow falling. Does anyone else think it makes a noise, or am I just going completely mad?

You're not going mad (or if you are, I am too!). There's something about the snow. It's tangible. For me, it's like a snapshot. Everything stops, and there's just the snow. We haven't had that much, it's just laying lightly, but there's still something so different about it. Snow turns everyone into nine year old children too :) It sounds soft, it's one of those sounds that sounds like it's coming from nowhere, but it's so calming.

So do you think that its the silence that I notice and maybe thats why I think it makes a noise?

When I was young I could hear snow too. It's almost like a light breezy noise or almost a light steady whooshing noise even during light snowfall. I miss that as well and forgot all about it until you mentioned it!

Yes, there is a different atmosphere when it's snowing, - but I actually think it is because it's so quiet - not because it makes a noise. It wraps everything in a sort of blanket, so you can't hear the sound of footstps, or cars and everything is muffled by the stillness.

When it is snowing I notice an accoustic differnce. As the air is full of snow flakes, the denseness lessens echoes. Sometimes when it is really cold, almost too cold to snow we can hear the snow hit the ground.
