i have to do a term paper about the drinking age in the United States. the US has the highest drinking age of any other country in the world. my freind is serving in the army over in iraq. he came back for a couple months and he was mad to find out that a bar wouldnt serve him because he is 20. he can usually use his military ID to get served drinks but the bar tender asked for his license. he was pretty mad to know that he can risk his life for the country but he cant get a jager bomb. do you think the drinking age should be lowered?

From what you said, I presume the minimum age limit for drinking is 21? If so, I would say that it should be reduced. Kids nowadays mature very quickly as compared to us. They are old enough to think for themselves by 18.

I would definitely lower the drinking age. Please don't understand my comments as an attack to the US, I just want to show you what's going on in Spain. Until the last drinking law was passed, drinking age was 16. maybe to the surprise of some people, it is now, when drinking age has been set up to 18 that more and more teenagers under 16 are found drunk every weekend. This means, official papers talk of 3 out of 4 teenagers who have got drunk at least twice in the last month. Definitely, the desire to do something illegal or forbidden is bigger as hte farthest is the limit to be able to legally do it. Hope this helps you with your paper. Ask me if you need any data about how this problem is fought in Spain.

It would have saved me from worrying about contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Oh wait, I didn't say that!

The drinking age here is 18 but I wish it was 21. Young people drinking does not end in fairy tales. Instead you get things like drink driving, unwanted pregnancies and noise pollution. Surely the money could be spent on better things. Like a holiday or car?! As for the the army, that is a job or career. Its just like any other dangerous job apart from you don't get American so called 'friendly fire' working in the fire department.

Absolutely. It doesn't make sense at all. At 18 you are otherwise a legal adult, you can get married, you can get arrested, you can be executed, you can be sued, etc, etc. So why can't you drink? Its funny that you can get drunk illegally, since you aren't responsible enough to drink legally yet, then do something stupid while drunk and be charged with the crime, since you ARE responsible enough for that.

I think 20 would be a safe age but not any lower than that. It has to be for a mature group so they no how to make safe choices and not drink and drive.
