11 and 12 year old kids having their "prom"?

My 11 year old sister attended their acquaintance party last night, and I got the chance to watch them in their school with my mom. The kids were all in their night gowns and tuxs, and looked like they were high school students having their prom! Nevertheless, they enjoyed every dances they had with their partners including my sister. Though they looked utterly cute, would there be any disadvantages with such kind of party? My mom, when she first knew about the acquaintance party, thought it wasn't a good idea because they were still kids. But when she saw my sister having the time of her life on the dance floor with other colleagues, she was satisfied.

I just had to respond to this 'cause as a matter of fact I've just dropped my daughter & her friend off at their high school dance. Both girls,,ages 15 looked absolutly beautiful!! The school is putting out red carpets for them & everything!? I will pick them up at 10 o-clock?

I think we're pushing our kids to grow up too soon, to do too many older activities like this. If they start having formal parties at 11, what do they have to look forward to at their senior prom? By then it's old hat. I say let them be kids for just a little while longer.
