Where did all the english tenses come from?

Past perfect, progressive, present simple, present perfect progressive and so on, it never ends!
Where di it all come from and why isn't it changing to 3 simple tenses of past, present and future?

I think three simple tenses of past, present and future are not enough to deal with the various situations and circumtances involved in daily life. Our ancestors invented languages through their experiences and they might find that three simple tenses were just not sufficient.
