Does anyone take the time to make dinner from scratch anymore?

There are so many short cuts to meal time out there now. Fast food restaurants and pizzarias and the like. Frozen foods are now bountiful, some with everything mixed together for like a stew. Does anyone take the time to make a dinner from scratch anymore? If so, how often?

Yes we try to find the time to make meals from scratch as much as possible. It tends to be about 4 times a week, we'll maybe make a chilli, spaghetti bolognese, a stew, pasta in home made sauce or something like that. On the days that we don't prepare our food from scratch we will usually prepare fresh vegetables or a fresh salad and serve it with something from the freezer like a pie or sausages etc. We try and plan our meals weekly so we can make sure we have everything in that we need for the week ahead, because of this it's much easier to prepare food from scratch, and when you have a meal rota set up it doesn't seem like such a huge effort to get the pans out and start cooking. It's much nicer knowing exactly what were eating aswell.

I'm like you; knowing what I'm going to cook ahead of time and shopping once a week takes so much of the stress out of preparing healthy meals. Good for you!

Yes, bonbon, my husband and I adament that our children (and us) have nutritional meals. We cook from scratch 99% of the time! We often use Sunday afternoons to prepare a few things to make the coming week's meals easier. We will have a crockpot going with chili or homemade vegetable soup, we'll have a stock pot on the stove with something else (spaghetti sauce for instance) and we'll have a casserole and meatload in the oven! Some Sundays we will chop numerous vegetables for the following week so that in the evening after work all that is necessary is to go home and braise them or use them in recipes! If we are planning a mexican meal in the following week, we will go ahead and brown the groundbeef and put into a large bowl in the fridge! Or, if we are using chicken, we will go ahead and prepare it with the fajita sauce! It is easy to have home meals through the week if you do alot of your prep on the weekend when you have more time!

Wow! Great for you and your family! It sounds like you're a well organized person and realize the benefits of planning ahead! I love my crock pot and wonder why people don't use them more. You can assemble 'dinner' in it the night before and cook it the next day while you're busy at work or tasks! Meat comes out so tender also!
